This colorful painting dates to 1900 and features a lively scene of people watching as a merchant offers some unknown bottled substance for sale on a podium in the village market. In the foreground, you can see a pickpocket at work just as an armed man seems to catch him in the act. There are so many interesting moments captured in this scene, and just as the details are mesmerizing, the colors are also vibrant and bright. Signed "DP or DPL" in lower right corner-- the cipher could be two letters or three, but the artist is unknown. This piece is painted on cotton and it's stretched on a wood frame. Measures 58.5"H x 38"W x 1"D. Slight fading is present and the material that has been tacked to the stretchers is worn in places. However, the piece is in quite good condition.
