This antique French mahogany commode has many features that give it a Louis Philippe style, including the drawer design, which includes three main body drawers, along with a top drawer with a built-in bureau. There's also a narrow bottom drawer which sits between the legs of the piece, which makes it look like it's part of the structure and almost like a "hidden" drawer. The top drawer with built in bureau has a hinged front which can be opened and pulled out to allow you to sit and use it as a desk. There are three interior drawers, one on the right with a locking mechanism and two smaller narrow drawers on the left. The right-hand drawer also has an additional sliding sectioned insert inside. The desktop portion also features a gilt-trimmed leather section, metal hinges, and a spring-tension mechanism to open and close the drawer front.
Measures: 48" W x 21" D x 37.75" H. The dresser uses key-pulls, for which two keys are included. A third key is used for the locking bureau drawer. The drawer escutcheons are beautifully detailed brass with patination from age. There are some minor cosmetic issues, such as surface wear and a small chip in one drawer front that appears old, as it has darkened and is not immediately noticeable (shown). There is also some damage to the inside of the front leg (shown) and evidence of past wormwood. All of these things only add to the overall character and beauty of this well-crafted piece.
