  • If you’re looking for a fun, unique accent for your tabletop decor, look no further! These charming and beautiful stoneware lids once topped containers which held potted meats, a custom that has long since been replaced with other types of packaging. These stoneware containers were used back in the 1800s to package all types of products all the way through the 1920s. You can still bring back fond memories of the good old days with these one-of-a-kind stoneware lids. This particular lid was unearthed in Belgium during our most recent sourcing trip! We absolutely had to add it to our collection.

Our Stoneware Potted Meat Lids are sure to last. The transfer labels were applied before the glazing and firing, making them remarkably durable and resistant to fading. Each lid measures approximately 3.25 inches in diameter and 1 ¾ inches in height, making it the perfect size for any tabletop. Choose from the classic designs of Potted Meat or three styles of Burgess Anchovy Paste, or any combination to make for an eye-catching accent piece.

Potted meat is a preserved meat product that hasn’t been seen in nearly a century. These meats are cooked, placed in a pot while still hot, and then packed tight without any room for air. After this, it is covered with hot fat. When the whole thing cools and hardens, it forms an airtight seal that helps preserve the meat and prevent spoiling. Before refrigeration became commonplace, potted meat was the best way to preserve fresh meat that couldn’t be eaten until later.

These stoneware lids are in remarkable condition, with some light colorations that add to the worn-in, vintage look. They are clean, bright, strong, and sturdy with clear, full wording. Your guests are sure to ask about these lids, since they are so unique and beautiful!
