This wonderful piece of handmade stage scenery was used in a 1980s production of Don Pasquale at by the Houston Grand Opera. The piece is a representation of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and is hand-painted canvas on a wood frame with a folding Stand on hinges. It is painted in creams, tans, ivory and browns and is a stunning oversized art piece that could be leaned on a wall or placed above a large piece of furniture.
The piece is 105 inches high, or just short of nine feet tall and 59 inches wide. With the stand closed, it is 2.5 inches deep and with it open, it is 30 inches deep. See images for more details. There are some places where the canvas is worn and has separated or has some fraying, which are shown in the images. It has also been repaired in one place on the dome (also pictured).
