  • Antique Metal & Wood Profession Crucifix found in France

  • $295.00

  • This is an antique, profession crucifix, which is made to be worn by a nun or priest when taking their vows. These crucifixes are often brass or nickel and silver with rosewood or ebony inlay. This one appears to be brass, but we have not tested the metal. The wood inlay is in good condition. The base of the crucifix would have had a skull and crossbones symbol, but it has been removed, which is often the case with very old pieces, as there was a time when people felt it too morbid.

The traditional special features of this crucifix are the addition of the metal symbols, traditional symbols of religious life and religious profession:

    • Aureole -- a circle of light or brightness surrounding something, especially as depicted in art around the head or body of a person represented as holy (around head of corpus)
    • Sacred Heart surrounded by crown of thorns (back)
    • Skull and crossbones below the corpus, representing Christ's triumph over death (removed).

This piece measures 4"L x 2"W x 0.5"D. Metal is patinated and can be polished with a soft cloth or left as is. Discoloration throughout and surface wear, which is common as these piece would have been handled regularly by human hands. Please see images for full details.
